Based on Michael Morpurgo’s young-adult novel, this stark and thrilling drama tells a coming-of-age tale of compassion and survival. Devon country lad Albert (Seth Numrich) bonds with a horse named Joey (a stunning life-size puppet crafted by the Handspring Puppet Company) before both are thrown into the hellish crucible of World War I. Directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris blend painterly design elements and a sterling ensemble to build a triumphant epic of human and animal spirit.

Roundabout’s shipshape revival of this Cole Porter vehicle, directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, doesn’t pretend to offer anything more (or less) than old-fashioned escapism: a nostalgia trip on a big Broadway liner. Most of the company provides a pleasant night of smooth sailing; the pert Sutton Foster anchors the show but doesn’t quite have the weight to stop it.

Director-designer Julie Taymor surrounds the Disney movie’s mythic plot and Elton John–Tim Rice score with African rhythm and music. Through elegant puppetry, Taymor populates the stage with a menagerie of African beasts; her staging has expanded a simple cub into the pride of Broadway.
